The Offer
Andais offered Merry the chance to win the throne in Kiss of Shadows. Here are some snippets from the book to remind you how it went.
"I wanted my bloodline to continue, not theirs. There was a time when I would have preferred you dead than risk you inheriting my throne."
"Essus told me that you were his daughter. That he loved you. He also told me that you would make a fine queen someday. I laughed at him." She watched my face. "I'm not laughing now, Niece."
"I want our bloodline to continue, Meredith."
"I am going to rescind my geas of celibacy for my guard."
"The geas will be lifted for you and you alone, Meredith."
"You must sleep with most of them before making your choice. That way they'll all feel they've had a chance. Otherwise, you are right. There will be duels until no one is left standing. Make them work at seducing you instead of killing each other." - Andais
"And what does my cousin Cel think of that?" - Merry
"Whichever one of you gives me a child first, that one shall inherit my throne. Does that not sweeten the pot?" -Andais
"I will step down." - Andais
I stared at her. "You're naming me heir. You're letting me date the Guard. It's not a fate worse than death, Aunt Andais." - Merry
To Be Queen
The Queen wants you home, Meredith. But she feared you would not believe her. I am her token to you. Her Darkness sent with her personal weapon in hand, with her magic in my body, to prove that she is sincere. ~ Doyle to Meredith
Merry's desire to be queen has more to do with protecting those she loves than a desire for power. She often finds herself thinking about how easy it is to abuse power, and almost avoiding using her authority for fear she may end up like Andais.
In Caress of Twilight, after the near loss of Kitto, and a minor rebellion by Rhys, Merry realizes that she has to step in and be more than just a figurehead.
She bargained for alliances from the Demi-fey and the goblins, but alliances don't last forever and the return of lost powers at the end of CoT will likely bring more rebellions from her guard than she's probably hoping for.
Merry's time free of Cel is running out. Soon he'll be planning attacks against her and back in the running for the throne. And if Cel wins the throne, Merry knows she and those who supported her, probably won't live much longer.
